AVE MARIA, Fla. --- The 2015 football season has finally arrived with the Ave Maria Gyrenes traveling to New York to take on NCAA DII Pace University on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
Live stats and live video will be available for the game and can be found above and on the Ave Maria Athletics website.
The Blue and Green are coming off a 5-6 2014 campaign in which they finished with a 3-2 mark in Sun Conference action and in a tie for second place with Southeastern and Warner. Ave Maria is picked to finish fourth in the conference this season. The Gyrenes received one first place vote in the conference preseason coaches' poll.
Ave Maria returns many key players from a year ago, including third-year starting quarterback Clayton Uecker. Uecker posted career marks in 2014 in completions with 199 and passing yards with 2,494. He completed passes at a 53.5 percent clip and tossed 20 touchdowns. An experienced offensive line will protect Uecker, led by AFCA-NAIA Second Team All-American Jeff Lindenmoyer at right tackle.
In the backfield, the running back tandem of Kaleb Coffee and Dustin Roberts hope to give the Gyrenes a consistent ground game. In 2014, Coffee rushed for 457 yards and four touchdowns while Roberts led the Blue and Green with 571 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Gyrenes return their leading tacklers in linebacker Frank Kelly and safety Nick Dorgan. The duo of Kelly (64 total tackles) and Dorgan (63 total tackles) totaled 127 total tackles last season, including a combined 13.5 tackles for a loss.
Pace University is coming off a 1-10 season in 2014 as they prepare to open the season and a new stadium on Saturday. Pace averaged 12.7 points per game last season while allowing opponents to score 43.7 points per game.
The Setters return their leading rusher from last season in rising senior Valentino Miles. Miles rushed for 286 yards on 70 attempts with four touchdowns. Delaney Wallace, who rushed for 246 yards on 76 attempts in 2014, also returns for Pace.
At the quarterback position, the Setters will turn to true freshman Dan Anerella. Kyle Johnson is the top returning receiver for Pace. He caught 41 passes for 599 yards and four touchdowns last season.
