Comets Football returns in the fall looking to build off last year's experiences and become a force in the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA). The Comets return 13 starters from last year's squad. Here's Coach John Haines [3] with an in-depth look at his team:

Defensively we have improved our team speed. Weston McGill [4] (Defensive Coordinator) and Nate Gill (DB coach) will have a sophomore and junior filled group to work with. We will have upgraded in the back end of our defense and will very good at linebacker with new additions competing for playing time. Marcus Cheatom will be the cornerstone of the young group up front. With a solid group returning in the secondary and new additions it will improve our pass defense from one year ago.

Offensively we have also upgraded in the speed department as well. The running back group could be the deepest position on offense with some new addition of Martin Stafford and Superior Ried (both Rivals 2 star recruits as high school players). In addition, Jerril Jenkins [5] is back from knee injury last season and spring stand out red-shirt freshman Desmond Earls [6] brings a physical running style to the offense. QB will be very competitive as well as we have Jordan Ares, who won the starting job in spring football, as well as a very athletic Chris Pope and Chris Mayes competing in camp. Upfront Jordan Melendo [7] will be back directing traffic with a solid group of returners.  Israel Evens, Donnel Lefotu [8]William Shackelford [9] will be a year older and better in the competition at OL.  The addition of Aaron Johnson [10] (1st team all-conference on defense last season) to the offense will bring an athletic presence to the OT position. Our wide receivers will be a solid group and be asked to pick up the production with Lance Jackson [11] no longer around. Dantrel Horne [12], Will Simpson, Jacob Lawrence [13], and Ricky Smith will be an athletic group that worked very well this spring.  With the addition of LJ McMorris to add more speed (track star in high school with sub 10.8 speed in 100m, 4.4 forty in combines through his career).

Overall, we will be improved and feel the product on this field this year with an improved ability to make the big play. With a good group of young talent holding over from last year and some key additions on both sides we should come together. The coaching staff feels that we have a great base group with talent. The first two weeks will test the group with St. Mary and Valley City State to open the year.
