Preparation for University of Saint Francis football season No. 18 got underway Monday morning and by the time the first day of two-a-days was over, the Cougars learned they were tied for 26th in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Top 25.

It's the start of Head Coach Kevin Donley's 18th season at USF and the 37th of his career. He enters this season with an NAIA career-record 278 wins, but only six in 2014.

"We feel like we let our alumni down and we're focused on making up for it this year," USF junior wide receiver Seth Coatetold Jessica Starbard (WANE-TV Channel 15).

"We had more players come to workouts this summer and it shows," Donley stated. "Looks like we're in pretty good shape. It's early, but I like what I saw out there today."

The first day of two-a-day practice drew media coverage from all three TV stations in Fort Wayne as well as sports reporters Greg Jones (Journal Gazette) and Reggie Hayes (The News-Sentinel).

The lone glitch in Monday's afternoon practice was a 20-minute downpour that interrupted practice for about 30 minutes. The sudden shower was a welcomed respite from an oppressive afternoon as the sun broke through the overcast skies to help warm up the second practice of the day.

The Cougars will get into full pads on Wednesday afternoon.

USF was tied with Sterling (Kan.) and Montana Western for No. 26 in the poll released late Monday afternoon. Sterling College finished 7-4 in 2014 including a 31-30 loss at then No. 5 Baker (Kan.) and a 42-41 loss at No. 19 Ottawa (Kan.). Montana Western finished 6-5, 6-4 in Frontier Conference play and won its last four games of the season.
